MIXED AGES CLASS (birth - 5 years)

Each semester (Winter, Spring, and Fall) consists of ten weeks of classes, 45 minutes/class. (The Summer program is 6 weeks.) Each semester has a music curriculum which include songs, rhythmic rhymes, movement, and instrument play. These activities are presented as informal, non-performance-oriented musical experiences--developmentally appropriate for children and easy for parents and caregivers--regardless of their own musical ability. Two CDs, a DVD, and a songbook are included! Some of the instruments we use are egg shakers, rhythm sticks, scarves and resonator bells.

Early childhood educators are now recommending mixed-age groupings as a better learning environment. Older children learn from being in a leadership role, and younger children benefit from the example of an older child. The classes have more of a "family feel" rather than a school orientation. Siblings can participate together, as well as moms, dads, grandparents, and caregivers.

• The activities are parent-child oriented, not child-child, so children don't need to be with children of the same age
• Class size is 6-12 children

BABIES CLASS (birth - 10 months)

This class is designed as a one-semester introduction to Music Together. It starts babies on a pathway of music development that will allow them to embrace, enjoy, and express their inborn musicality. Whether or not your child’s journey leads to formal music study is a choice for another day – for now, the particular delight of this class is seeing how truly responsive to music babies are and discovering how to recognize and support their developing music behaviors.

Even newborns are exquisitely prepared for a music experience. Although babies are born with little control over their bodies and without much visual acuity, their sense of hearing is well-developed. They begin to hear and respond to sound in the womb, from about week 19 of gestation (Hepper and Shahidullah, 1994) and are alert to the sounds of music and speech as soon as they are born. In the Babies class, you will see that babies are as fully prepared to learn the language of music through adult modeling and interaction.

You and your baby will share activities that have been carefully developed for our youngest “students.” You’ll learn about how children develop musically and how you can support that development in your own baby. You’ll discover new ways of interacting with your baby and you’ll experience how profoundly satisfying it can be to bond with your infant musically.
